Landscape Practices-conference in Kautokeino is open for registration

The conference will be held from Tuesday 20 September to Thursday 22 September at Sami University of applied sciences in Kautokeino. Invited speakers are Professor Thomas F. Thornton at the University of Southeast Alaska, Head of the Arctic Environment Department of the Sami Council Gunn Britt Retter, Professor at the University of Alberta Brenda L. Parlee and Teetl’it Zheh Indigenous Leader and Tradition Chief Chief Wanda Pascal. Deadline for registration is 31. August.

We invite contributions addressing different indigenous landscape practices, including but not limited to the gathering of eggs, plants, and berries, to reflect on the insights we may gain from paying more attention to people’s knowing and caring through landscape practices.

New student ambassadors for Sámi University of Applied Sciences in Russia

Last autumn 5 exchange students came all the way from Yakutsk in Russia to the Sámi University of Applied Sciences in Kautokeino. They were students at the SÁÁL studies that is taught every autumm semester at the Sámi University of Applied Sciences, and amongst other things they learned Sámi language and about Sámi culture. For many of them, Kautokeino was their first meet with Europe. Read more about their stay in Kautokeino here.
